This is a race I thoroughly enjoyed last year, therefore it was a certainty for my race calendar this year. This race is on the Norfolk Broads and resembles the Canals of the 11 Cities. Due to the flat and narrow waterways I chose to use my Black Project weed fin.
The week before the race I unfortunately partially dislocated my shoulder and questioned whether I would be able to race. The day before I visited my physio and asked him to tape my shoulder to stabilize it.
I was extremely nervous before the race and just hoped my shoulder would hold out. The first 6km of the 15km was really tough as we were pushing against current, adding to that I was having to paddle most of the distance on one side due to my shoulder pain. I stopped after 45 minutes and considered pulling out of the race. Instead of giving up I gave myself a stern talking to, which went like “your shoulder is still in place, so just keep paddling”.
When the tide turned and I was paddling with current the pain eased as I was not having to use so much power to pull myself through the water. I was determined to finish.
As I crossed the finish line as 1st female and 3 minutes ahead of second place I was really happy and relieved.
This is my last UK race before the 11 City Tour.
