Olukai Race

In April I competed in my first down wind race and thought I may as well do the biggest race in the World.  So I headed to visit friends in Maui for two weeks training before the race.  I have never paddled down wind before in strong wind and big swell, but hey ho I may as well give it a go.

First venture out was a baptism of fire, winds of over 40 knots and double overhead swell.  It was messy, it was not fun but I survived to paddle again.

I took my 12’6 Naish One inflatable with me to race, much to peoples amusement but it did the job and I placed 3rd in my age group, 11th in the 14′ class, despite being on a 12’6 and placed in front of a few Elite females.  Not bad for a first try and being the only paddler on an inflatable.sufc16
